NZ Staff takes a proactive approach to meeting NZ’s demand for civil construction jobs

NZ’s private and public sector is currently scrambling for project managers, civil engineers, construction and building workers as the nation moves through a major rebuilding phase. Motorways, bridges, tunnels are being upgraded across NZ, and Christchurch has numerous active and planned building projects underway for its rebuilding after the devastating earthquake in May 2012.

This demand, combined with NZ’s talent drain (whereby people across all sectors seek opportunities and higher pay offshore, in Australia’s mining industry for example) is creating very high demand for construction roles including drivers, traffic control, asphaltors and machinery operators.

Scott Farrow, NZ Staff’s NZ manager said, “We’ve witnessed client dilemmas where they are ready to commence projects but they can’t because of a lack of specific critical skills sets such as Class 5 drivers. To avoid such frustrating and costly delays NZ Staff works with clients across all industries, but particularly in civil construction, to tackle these labour challenges proactively. “It’s no longer satisfactory to post and ad on a job board. Companies need to be positioning themselves with skilled people when they are still in training and touching them before they enter the workforce,” said Scott.

For client, Action Traffic, NZ Staff has recruited traffic controllers based on profiling and assessment and then put the recruits through a one-week training course to upskill them and have them ready to start immediately on the job as traffic controllers.

“We’re working with our clients to plan what skills or casual staff they might need in six month’s time so that a talent pool or training program can be organised to meet the businesses’ future demand. We go the extra mile to get on the front foot and help clients get prepared – we know that commerce won’t wait and we hear client’s complaining that they’re sick of managing the agency. We flip that scenario upside putting action plans in place get our clients the required people resources well in advance.
